Today’s 21st century man faces more pressure than ever before to look his best. Exclusive grooming salons and a range of products are redefining what it is to be male. Masculinity is undergoing a shift. No longer solely about that scruffy, rugged look, being well-groomed is sweeping the world. Facials and manicures are now part of the modern man’s regime, and metrosexual men are rampant like never before. I even stumbled across the term ‘übersexual’ – a man making the most of himself in all aspects. It’s no longer the two corners of macho and metrosexual, but a change in how men perceive themselves and what they stand for. The stigma attached to male grooming seems to be fading, and fast – men realise that taking care of themselves is not feminine, it’s a matter of good health and hygiene. The new face of masculinity is tilting towards those taking care of their appearance but also having the strength and dependability of a traditional male.
The modern man wants to look his best without spending hours in front of the mirror. The bathroom is the one place where we transform ourselves into all our manly best. Let’s face it, when you roll out of bed you’re hair’s a mess, and your morning shadow looks more hobo than stylish. Men aren’t great at spending too much time on their appearance so what do we normally do? More often than not, just splash some cold water, run a blunt razor over your face, and try to style your hair the best you can before using that beaten down toothbrush you got on that buy-one-get-one offer months ago. Maybe even use some mouthwash if you’ve got some extra time to kill. The wrong routine, however, does little to achieve that polished and powerful look we all strive for.
A rise in male grooming products and brands is simply meeting demand, and I thought it would be great to share a great new Indian company – The Man Company, a content-based subscription e-commerce platform for men’s grooming and essentials, where consumers have the flexibility to periodically receive products delivered to them based on their usage patterns. The company aims to offer convenience and choice by combining technology, engaging content, and premium products. No longer will men like me need to use women’s grooming products to look our best – no, now we have a brand dedicated to us alphas.I was lucky to get a beautiful box of products from The Man Company to try out, and I thought I’d run you through my morning routine. You can choose your combination of products, but here are the six essential items I’ve reviewed to help every modern man look his groomed best every morning:
- Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo
- Charcoal Soap
- Tea Tree Mint Shave Gel
- Coffee Bean &Pachouli Face Wash
- Aloe Vera & Vitamin E Hair Gel
- Lavender &Cedarwood Beard Oil
Before I go any further, what I really like about The Man Company’s products is how genuine they are. There aren’t any artificial or synthetic fragrances and oils – just the real stuff, the way nature intended us to use it. I’m very particular about what products I use on my body, and The Man Company passed that test for me. As an animal lover, I was also pleased to see that none of the products had been tested on animals. So without further ado, let me walk you through my morning routine.
Step 1: The Shower
I start my day with a shower to completely wake myself up. I begin my routine using the Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo. The shampoo smells great and lathers nicely. I chose this shampoo because the Argan nut is rich in vitamin E, which promotes healthy hair and has lots of qualities which help with a clean and heathy scalp. Gentlemen, it’s vital you keep your hair looking its best because it can make a world of difference to your overall appearance. So do your hair a favour and give this a shot! When it comes to washing your hair, you want to wash it every other day, as most shampoos strip your hair of natural oils. The Man Company’s shampoo’s, however, are good for daily use, which I like. Tip – make sure to use a conditioner every other day when you shampoo to keep your hair silky smooth.
Finding the right soap based on your skin type is important. You may have to look for soap bars which do not contain many of the harsh ingredients found in regular soap. If you have oily skin, make sure you use a body wash with glycolic or salicylic acid, which helps open your pores and degrease the skin. I use The Man Company’s Charcoal Soap as part of my morning routine. Charcoal is a tried and tested cleansing ingredient, known for its ability to extract impurities from the body, including dirt and oils blocking your pores. It also has anti-bacterial properties that cleanse and exfoliate your skin. Using a charcoal soap can help reduce acne and blemishes, reduce pigmentation, make your skin look younger, and be a skin detox.
Step 2: The Brush
Looking after your teeth cannot be understated. Buy a large soft-headed bristled brush, as it covers maximum surface area faster and is lighter on the gums. Angle your brush and cycle to brush your teeth and gums. If you want to finish off with a mouthwash, try and use one which is alcohol-free, as alcohol dries the inside of your mouth. Also, if you struggle with bad breath, try and find one that includes chlorine dioxide.
Brush your tongue as well to get rid of all that built-up bacteria, and last but not least, floss those pearly whites. Flossing keeps your gums healthy and has even been shown to lower the risk of heart and autoimmune issues, so to answer you’re question, yes it is important!
Step 3: The Shave
I like to shave right after my shower, as the heat opens up my pores. Finding a good shaving foam that loosens and moistens the skin is important so you don’t feel like you’re running a blunt razor over your face. Tip – make sure you only shave in the direction your hair grows. Do not shave against the grain, not even on your neck. For a closer shave, re-lather and shave again. The last thing you want is ingrowth and red patches on your face and neck!
I use The Man Company’s Tea Tree Mint Shave Gel as part of my routine. Beards are all the rage today, but it’s paramount that you keep your scruff well-groomed. Long or short, make sure you stay sharp. The shave gel has a cooling and soothing effect, and it instantly seems to nourish my skin. I get a close shave, and the hit of mint wakes up all my senses and leaves my face feeling cool as ice.
Step 4: The Face Wash
Washing your face is key to keeping your skin blemish free and glowing. Focus on the T-zone – that’s your forehead and nose area where maximum dirt and oil tend to accumulate. Massage your face thoroughly and rinse for an instantly brighter feel. Post your face wash, make sure to use a moisturizer as well. It’s important to find the right moisturiser for your skin type. Ask your pharmacist for help, and make sure it has SPF 15 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and sun damage. If you really want to take care of that money maker, exfoliate your skin once a week to allow your moisturizer to absorb better. Tip – Don’t scrub too hard, as it can irritate the skin, which is especially important for those prone to acne issues.
I use The Man Company’s Coffee Bean & Pachouli Face Wash. This face wash leaves my face feeling cleaner, tighter, and fresher, and the invigorating fragrance is a bonus. Your face enjoys that morning coffee just as much as your taste buds do!
Step 5: Hair
Make sure to style your hair before applying any product. This will highlight the areas that require more hold and will help prevent overusing your products. More importantly, especially when using a gel, it will help you avoid that hard look you may see your associates sporting – the more natural the look the better. You don’t need to use too much product to style your hair – I’d go with what fits on the tip of your finger at most. I’ll skip going into detail about all the different kinds of products from gels to creams to pastes and everything in between, but make sure to find that product that really gives you that desired look. If your hair is still out of place after applying product, read no further, pick up the phone, and book an appointment with your barber immediately.
I use The Man Company’s Aloe Vera & Vitamin E Hair Gel. As I mentioned earlier gentlemen, hair is crucial to your overall look, and a bad hairdo can sometimes ruin that immaculate outfit you worked so hard to put together. But I know what you’re thinking – hair gel leads to hair loss. I actually suffered from this and stopped using hair gel altogether, and when I received this product I was initially hesitant. The hair gel sets well and styles well too. You can also rest assured knowing that aloe vera, in addition to preventing hair loss, is perfect for restoring the pH of your scalp and hair, further promoting hair growth. So go ahead and style your hair everyday fearlessly.
Step 6: The Beard (if applicable)
Beards are all the craze this season, and it only seems logical to cater to that niche with a specialized oil, right? Well, I don’t know about you, but this was my first time using a beard oil, and I have to tell you, I liked it! I use The Man Company’s Lavender & Cedarwood Beard Oil. Lavender isn’t just useful for aromatics and stress relieving properties, but it works great on hair too. Lavender moisturises the skin, promotes hair growth, and has anti-bacterial properties. The Cedarwood aroma relaxes my senses, and is the perfect end to my grooming routine, putting me in a calm state of mind. Cedarwood is also known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties. So gentlemen, go ahead and take care of God’s gift to men – The Beard!
The best part is that this entire routine should not take you any longer than 25 minutes. So you have ample time for yourself and can tackle your day looking flawless.
