Last Month I was invited for an interaction session with Dr.
Sangeeta Velaskar, Vice President and Head, Medical Services and R&D, Kaya
Skin Clinic on 21st April, 2015 at Kaya Skin Clinic, Bandra. She is also the
co-author for the Kaya Skin Clinic’s “How to look like a million bucks” book.
The topic of discussion was everything related to Laser and the treatments
which are available at Kaya.

Many of us are not familiar with what laser is and does.
Move over we are clueless about the various types of laser services which are
available for different skin/hair care needs. In today’s post, after the
detailed conversation with Dr. Sangeeta Velaskar, I am going to give you some
Gyaan on various aspects of lasers and also bust some myths.
In today’s day and age, where our busy lifestyle doesn’t
allow us the time to take care of our hair/ skin, Laser treatments are becoming
increasingly popular because of its wide-ranging benefits. Laser Treatments
provide long term solution to problems such as Aging, Acne, Hyper Pigmentation,
Scars, Hair Reduction and also Hair Growth.
Even though it is laser treatments which is being used the
technology behind each of the issues are different. For Hair Reduction Laser
treatments like Nd:YAG, Diode, Alexandrite and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) are
being used. The same way for Skin issues like Hyper pigmentation, Scars and
Acne laser treatment like Er.YAG, Er:Glass, Blue Light, Red light and
Carbondioxide Fractionate Laser are being used. The dermatologist will suggest
that best out of the lot depending on your skin sensitivity, hair type and
Laser Hair Reduction, which is also one of the most popular
services provided at Kaya skin clinic works by a small burst of light which is
being targeted at the skins surface. The light then gets absorbed by the
melanin in the hair causing it to heat up and damaging the hair follics which
thus prevents the hair from re-growing. The reason it’s called Hair Reduction
and not Hair removal is because the laser works differently on different
people. For some the hair thickness and quantity might get reduced but at the
same time for some the growth won’t happen at all. You will have to take
minimum 4-6 sessions depending on the hair texture, growth and thickness and
one session once a year for maintenance. Laser Hair removal works best on thick
dark hair. The treatment won’t work on people with grey or light hair because
of lack of melanin or pigment.
Acne Scar & Hyper Pigmentation Laser Treatment is
another great service which they provide. Whether you have age/sun spots, acne
scars, blemish etc it can be treated and lightened with Laser treatment. It
works almost similar to the Laser hair reduction only here the laser light is
focused on the dark spots on the skin tissues. It’s advised to do this
treatment only after the age of 18 as your hormones are settled down by then.
A major myth that Dr. Sangeeta Velaskar has busted for me is
by stating the fact that Laser treatments don’t cause cancer. It was something
that always bothered me about Laser services, whether it’s safe for my skin or
will I get any health issues because of it. The laser works on the top few
layers of the skin and doesn’t penetrate deep inside the skin tissue which
makes it 100% safe.
